Where is Avala Located?
We're based in the San Francisco Bay Area, headquartered in Oakland, California.
Are you ok with remote employment?
We hope to hire 50% of our staff as remote employees and we have been building a remote culture from day 1. We do prefer candidates who are already located, or willing to move to the San Francisco Bay Area.
How will Avala make money?
We charge our enterprise customers a fee to use our AI Infrastructure platform. We plan to scale this to many industries, but the first one we are targeting it the Autonomous Vehicle sector.
Are you open to bringing on interns?
Yes! We have a few roles opening up this Summer/Fall and will have more coming later!
What's the interview process like?
We’ll likely do a quick 15-30 minute phone call just to make sure we’re on the same page. After that we typically schedule a few 30-60 minute zoom interview's with several team members to go over your technical abilities and give you the opportunity to get introduced to the team and the product. We try to keep it as quick as we can, usually taking no longer than a week.
How many people do you plan to hire?
We plan to grow the team a bit to around ~25 total people (+10) through the second half of 2021—in which case, we may reevaluate. The next set of people are going to help us to scale to hundreds and eventually thousands of paying customers as we progress to product-market-fit. We’ll be hiring mostly engineers and a few key non-technical roles.
What is work/life balance like at your company?
We usually leave work around 8 PM to have dinner with friends or family. As a result of being an early stage startup, we wouldn’t want to hide this reality to prospective candidates: raw hours actually make a big difference in the impact we can make right now. This won’t always be the case but it is at present. So, often we find ourselves working later on in the evening, on rare occasions a weekend, but it’s mostly driven by personal ambition. We don’t have any expectations of anyone to do so.
Has COVID-19 impacted you in any surprising ways?
Not really. Since Avala is still heavily being developed, we’re largely unimpacted economically and we don’t envision any serious headwinds since Avala is pure software and Avala's community work has largely been remote-first from day 1. Fortunately, we don’t have any major risks with the runway or burn at this point.
